1. Helping Nevada go solar Our partner groups across the country have helped millions of Americans invest in new solar electricity and hot water systems, reducing the pollution that causes global warming and our dependence on oil with clean, renewable, homegrown energy. And with the enormous solar thermal potential in Nevada and across the Southwest, we’re pushing for rebates, incentives and other policies that would spur more solar development in our state.
2. Preserving our national forests We continue to counter attempts to log and drill in national forests, including Nevada’s Humboldt-Toiyabe National Forest. When President Bush moved to open these forests to logging and new roads, our advocates and activists raised their voices in protest. The fight continues: We’re demanding permanent protection.
3. Protecting our water resources Our water resources are being drained by out-of-control sprawl, wasteful irrigation methods and coal plants that need millions of gallons of water for cooling. In September 2008, our federation released a report, “Using Water Wisely,” demonstrating that a switch to efficient water use could save up to 1.86 trillion gallons of water per year in six Southwestern states alone.
4. Advocating a new energy future In 2007, Nevada was recognized as a “rising star” clean energy state by our national federation. We’ll be working with our partners to advocate policies that promote energy efficiency and the use of renewable sources of energy in the state.
5. Stopping global warming America is lagging in the fight to stop global warming, but grassroots action is pushing the country in the right direction. Members of our federation have helped convince states such as California and New Jersey to take bold action limiting carbon emissions. We’ll be working to bring the same kind of bold action to Nevada.
6. Protecting our national parks Yosemite, Acadia, the Grand Canyon, Great Basin . . . Our national parks deserve the strongest possible protections. We helped win a victory in Congress to stop mining near the borders of national parks, but the Bush administration rolled it back. We’re back at it, working with our national federation to stop drilling, mining and logging in our most vulnerable and pristine public lands.
7. Bringing change to Washington In 2008, voters elected a pro-environment president and Congress. As part of Environment America Voter Action, we talked to more than one million voters about the environmental records of Barack Obama and the 29 pro-environment congressional candidates we endorsed—including Nevada Rep. Dina Titus.
8. Advancing cleaner, greener cars Imagine if cars that get better than 40 miles per gallon were the norm. Thanks to new policies won with our help and supported by President Obama, states such as Nevada will be able to get more hybrids and other low-emission vehicles on the road.
